Pastor’s Comments
Grace and Peace to you,
I read an interesting news
article on Ash Wednesday. In a USA Today
article, it was reported that Episcopalian priests were on street corners of
Chicago and St. Louis offering ashes to folks who were too busy for worship
that day.
My first reaction was not a good
one. You can’t make it to church at seven at night? Come on!
Later that night when I was
sitting in church at St. Martin UCC, and I began to think differently. We had a
nice attendance, but it wasn’t a door buster either. I was thinking how my
family had a mandatory 4H meeting that they had
(who are these folks still planning activities on a holy day anyway?) to
attend. I was thinking that the homework might not be getting done. If Cole
didn’t get it done before the meeting, he will be freaking out and wanting to
stay up past his bed time. Claire will not care until morning if her homework
is done, but they she will be upset. So much to get done in an evening at the
Schlieter house!
I guess the spirit of Ash
Wednesday and Lent is to begin an inward odyssey to look at the many ways we
have fallen short in our relationship with God. Ash Wednesday should remind us
of our frail human existence and that we need to return to total dependence on
God. Thus this is a time of repentance. If somehow we can make that real for
people who couldn’t attend, I suppose I am okay with ashes dispensed on a
street corner.
I think there other activities
that preclude us from worship and meetings. I can’t say that I am always happy
to hear such things, but I am coming to more of an understanding. I guess we
all have choices to make, and I always try really hard to put God first.
I know I had words with Cole’s baseball
coach last summer. In a manner that was gentle as possible, I told him that I
didn’t agree with Sunday practices as it is a day for worship and family. I was
especially careful to express my displeasure at Sunday morning practices. I think
the coach took it to heart. He did have a few more practices on Sunday morning
and Cole didn’t make all of them.
I guess that we all have to find
the spiritual practices that work for us. If you can’t make church for a while
then return as soon as you can. I find that activities outside the church begin
to pull us away and the next thing you know, it is six months since you
attended worship. In the meantime, find something, anything that connects you to God. Fasting, prayer, and Bible
study; find something that works for you. I will bend over backwards to help
someone better connect with God.
Ultimately this is also a church
challenge as well. How can we continue to plug people into Jesus if there is
something that impedes to worshipping at 9 am on a Sunday morning? Not sure if it is a conversation out among
the congregation, but it should be. In Christ,
Pastor David

Millions of God’s children in the world live on less than we spend on a cup of coffee. Even when times are tough and the world around us seems uncertain, are we confident enough in God’s blessings to share abundantly with those in need? Envelopes have been available for several weeks in a box on a table at the back of the sanctuary.
Please share what you can to remind the world that “God is still Speaking” in ways that make a real and tangible difference.
Your gifts will reduce preventable childbirth deaths in developing countries and respond to special appeals for domestic and international emergencies, including the Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund. You can be the channel through whom God satisfies the hungry, comforts the distressed, and brings hope to the hurting.
For more information see the brochures attached to your OGHS envelope. You can also go to www.ucc.org/oghs or contact the UCC office toll-free at 1-866-822-8224 x-3213.
